How Charge Weight Works

Understanding how carriers calculate shipping costs

What is Charge Weight?

Charge weight is the greater of either:

  • The actual dead weight of the package
  • The calculated cubic (dimensional) weight

Carriers use this to account for both the weight and space a package occupies in their vehicles.

How to Calculate Cubic Weight

The formula for cubic weight is:

(Length × Width × Height) ÷ Cubic Factor

Where dimensions are in centimeters and the cubic factor varies by carrier:

  • Road Freight: Typically 250
  • Pallet Freight: Typically 333
  • Internationational Freight: Typically 167
When is Cubic Weight Used?

Carriers will use cubic weight when:

  • You use your own packaging (not carrier-specific flat rate packaging)
  • The package is large but lightweight (low density)
  • The package has an irregular shape (using maximum dimensions)

Example: A package weighing 10kg but with a cubic weight of 15kg would be charged at 15kg.
